Since May 2025 Upwork sets a fee between 0% and 15% for each contract. You'll see it before you submit a proposal or accept an offer. Most freelancers get about 10%.

Connects cost $0.15 each. You get 10 free every month, so leave this off if you only use free ones.

How you withdraw

Fees differ for US and non-US freelancers. Upwork shows yours when you set up a payment method, and wire fees depend on the receiving bank. Not included: currency conversion by Payoneer, PayPal or your bank, and any taxes.

How Upwork fees work in 2026

Upwork charges freelancers in up to four places. Only the first is a percentage.

  • Service fee on Upwork jobs: 0–15%. Upwork used to charge a flat 10%. On 1 May 2025 it switched to a variable fee set per contract, based on demand in your category and the kind of project. You see the rate before you submit a proposal or accept an offer, and it stays the same for that contract.
  • Direct Contracts: 5% or 0%. When you bring your own client to Upwork, the fee is 5% on a Basic account and 0% with Freelancer Plus. If you cancel Plus, your existing Direct Contracts go back to 5% too.
  • Connects: $0.15 each. You need Connects to send proposals. Most jobs need 8–16 and boosted proposals need more. Every account gets 10 free Connects a month.
  • Withdrawal fees: a flat fee each time you move money out. It depends on the method (see below).

Upwork withdrawal fees

MethodUpwork's feeWatch out for
Direct to Local Bank$0.99Upwork's exchange rate when converting to your currency
Payoneer$2.00Payoneer's own fee when you withdraw to your bank
PayPal$2.00PayPal's transfer and currency conversion fees
ACH, non-US freelancers$2.99Your bank's charges for receiving it
ACH, US freelancers$0.00US bank accounts only
Wire transferUp to $50Depends on the receiving bank; intermediary banks may charge too

Withdrawal fees are flat, so on small payments they hurt more. $2 on a $50 withdrawal is 4%; on $1,000 it's 0.2%. Withdrawing less often keeps more of your money.

Is Freelancer Plus worth it for Direct Contracts?

Plus saves you 5% on Direct Contract earnings. At $19.99 a month, it pays for itself once you bill about $400 a month through Direct Contracts ($19.99 ÷ 5%). Plus also includes monthly Connects, so if you send many proposals it can pay off sooner. Check the current price in your membership settings, because it has changed over time.
